Mine has certainly needed a spruce once in a while! I was looking for ways to clean it up and make it look fresh. Follow the tips below to do the same for your sofa.

You don’t need to hire a professional or spend hours scrubbing to bring your sofa back to life. With a few simple cleaning steps and a couple of clever throw blanket tricks, you can revive even the oldest couch and make it feel fresh again.

Step-by-Step: How to Clean Your Sofa

1. Start with a Vacuum
Use your vacuum’s upholstery attachment to remove surface dust, hair, and crumbs. Don’t forget to:

  • Remove the cushions and vacuum underneath
  • Get into the corners and creases
  • Use a lint roller for stubborn pet hair

2. Spot Clean Stains
Check your sofa’s tag for cleaning codes:

  • W: Water-based cleaner is safe
  • S: Use solvent-based cleaner only
  • WS: Water or solvent cleaner is okay
  • X: Vacuum only (no moisture)

Mix a gentle cleaning solution depending on your sofa’s fabric. For most washable fabrics, you can use:

  • A small bowl of warm water
  • A few drops of mild dish soap
  • A clean white cloth to dab and lift the stain (never rub!)

3. Deodorize with Baking Soda
Sprinkle baking soda over the cushions and let it sit for 15–30 minutes. Then vacuum it up. This helps neutralize odors especially handy if you have pets or kids.

4. Wipe Down Non-Fabric Parts
If your sofa has wooden or metal legs or armrests, wipe them down with a damp cloth and a bit of dish soap. Dry immediately to prevent watermarks.

Tips to Make an Old Sofa Look New with Throw Blankets

Now that it’s clean, let’s talk style. Throws and cushions are the easiest way to hide worn fabric, cover mystery stains, or just give your sofa a seasonal refresh.

1. Use a Throw as a Cover
If your couch is seriously dated or stained in spots, drape a large throw blanket over the backrest and seat area. Choose a textured, thick material that won’t slide around. Neutral tones work great for hiding wear while keeping things stylish.

I’ve used a polar fleece which has been really good as it doesn’t seem to shift and very affordable. Below are some options.

2. Fold and Drape for a Polished Look
Don’t just toss the throw on fold it in thirds or quarters lengthwise, then drape it neatly over one armrest or down the center of the backrest. It gives that cozy-but-intentional vibe.

3. Layer With Cushions
Matching or contrasting cushions can pull the look together and help cover sagging or flattened areas. Stick to 2–3 cushions in varying sizes and textures to keep it visually balanced.

4. Go Seasonal
Change your throws and pillows with the seasons. Lighter fabrics like linen or cotton in summer, and chunkier knits or faux fur in winter. It makes your space feel fresh without a full furniture overhaul.

5. Embrace Imperfection
If your sofa’s seen better days, that’s okay. A strategically placed throw and a few comfy cushions can give it charm and character. Think cozy cottagecore or lived-in minimalism.

Think about the style you want to go for, and which type of fabric some will be more breathable than others, but if it’s cold you might want that fluffy throw which is maybe less breathable but warmer.
